For Christmas in 1945, my great grandmother Alice (Baker) Power received a diary from her daughter Edna and son-in-law Mason Baker. I came across it when my own Nan (Rose Power Mills) died. I’m not sure how she wound up with it, but from a note written on the inside cover, my great grandmother desired her other daughter Olive have it. I gave my Aunt Olive the original as per her mother’s wish but not before copying it for my own records.
I’ve had the copy of this diary in my filing cabinet for about 15 years now with the plan one day to publish it online so future generations can catch a glimpse into the musings of a wife of a fisherman in post-war East Jeddore, Nova Scotia.
I don’t believe there are any earth shattering or scandalous postings, and I assume most people mentioned in the diary are long gone. So, it’s likely safe to publish it now. It’s a five-year diary covering the years 1946 to 1950. So, this is going to take a while. Some of the handwriting is hard to make out, but I’ll do the best I can and leave blanks where I just can’t figure it out. I’ve transcribed the diary as written and have not corrected spelling or grammar.
